Business swings upwards for Indiana airport

Data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics shows that U.S. airlines carried 0.4 percent more passengers in July of this year in comparison to the same month in 2009. While overall that doesn't mark a huge increase, some airports show business is picking up. Indiana's South Bend Regional Airport is reporting that passenger traffic increased more than 18 percent this September compared to the same month last year. That equates to nearly 56,000 passengers going through the airport. More than 10,000 of those passengers travelled with Allegiant Air, but United Express and Delta Air Lines also posted strong numbers. The airport's executive director, John Schalliol, says it's exciting that more people are taking advantage of the airport's services. "We are delighted to realize that more and more passengers are choosing to fly from SBN, and are looking to SBN as their airport of choice," says Schalliol. "People throughout the region arebeginning to see that they can get anywhere from SBN." Airports play a crucial role in the economic well-being of the communities they serve. The transportation facilities tend to employ a large number of people and help support area restaurants and hotels among other services.
