A large number of wild animals have been hurt from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Southwest Airlines is helping the affected animals by donating funds to the National Wildlife Refuge Association.
Earlier this month, the airline ran a promotion where they agreed to donate $1 for each EarlyBird Check-In purchased. Now, $100,000 will be headed to the NWRA.
Southwest Airlines vice president of communication and strategic outreach Linda Rutherford says the company is pleased to make the contribution.
"We are honored and privileged to support the work of the NWRA, and we couldn't think of a better way to contribute to their efforts in the Gulf and around their refuge system than by donating time and funds," says Rutherford.
The NWRA assists brown pelicans, seabirds and sea turtles, among other animals that need help.
Data from the U.S. Department of the Interior estimates that 62,000 barrels of oil a day were leaking from the well at the beginning ofthe spill.
Even though the promotion with Southwest Airlines is over, there are still a number of ways people can donate to the cause. Consumers can go directly to the NWRA website to give money.
