A small plane crash in Central California has reportedly taken the lives of two adults and two children, according to the Huffington Post. Federal investigators had originally had the death toll at two, but changed their findings after further investigations.
The plane crashed into an unoccupied office building at the Watsonville Community Hospital, in Watsonville, California. Santa Cruz couple David and Dee Dee Houghton and their two sons were the victims and it was unclear if anyone onboard had pilots life insurance.
The plane, a 1974 single-engine Mooney M20, had just taken off from Watsonville municipal Airport when it crashed at approximately 7:30 p.m., Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford, told KTVU-TV. Witnesses reported that the plane was heading toward the coast as it tried to climb. The pilot appeared to be heading too steep to slow, the Huffington Post reports.
The building houses mainly physicians' offices and is across the street from the hospital. The medical office is approximately 100 yards from the hospital, according to the television station.
"None of our patients was affected," Hospital spokeswoman Cindy Weigelt told The Associated Press. "It did not hit the hospital."
