During a harrowing attempt to land his single-passenger plane, a pilot clipped a house and crash landed into a Cedar City, Utah, backyard, according to thespectrum.com. The plane broke into three pieces after the pilot lost power and attempted to glide into Cedar City's airport.
The pilot and his family were fortunate that he was able to walk away with minor injuries. It was unclear at the time whether or not the man had a pilots life insurance policy. The unidentified man was apparently traveling at 8,500 feet from Carson City, Nevada, when his engines died, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
Witnesses said the pilot was able to maneuver around all of the homes in the area, doing everything he could to avoid injuring innocent bystanders, according to thespectrum.com. The pilot told people at the scene that he had been a flight instructor for 30 years.
"He's just a lucky guy," Iron County Sheriff Mark Gower told the media outlet. "Most plane crashes, unfortunately, are fatal."
The crash damaged the home and shed that it struck, but fortunately the residents were not in the backyard where the pilot eventually landed.
