Connecticut town looks at airport noise

According to the Hartford Courant, residents in Wethersfield, Connecticut, may soon receive relief from what they say is increasing noise pollution created by the nearby Brainard Airport, a small regional airport that serves instructional and general aviation pilots as well as small charter planes.
The state of Connecticut, which operates Brainard Airport, agreed to install noise monitoring equipment to measure the decibel levels in the area, but officials say it may take up to two years before residents see any significant change, as the equipment must first be installed and then monitored for a significant amount of time before officials take any action.
Officials also say that the ratio of noise complaints to the number of flights out of the airport is very small, and only three complaints were lodged this past August and September, while some 12,500 flights came through the airport, according to the source.
Pilots are encouraged to draw up flight plans that fly over nearby highways and the Connecticut river rather than nearby neighborhoods to minimize noise in residential areas.
Many small, regional airports that support general aviation pilots are home to local chapters of national pilot groups or organizations. These groups offer support to aviators in a number of ways, through continuing safety training, discounted rates on pilot insurance and financial estate planning for pilots.
