According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Steven Nusbaum, who was piloting an experimental aircraft in McHenry County, Illinois, was forced to make an emergency landing when he suffered a heart attack.
Nusbaum was listed in critical but stable condition at Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center, where he was transported following the landing. First responders, from the McHenry County Sheriff's office and local fire department, found Nusbaum in his airplane, in the farm field where he had made the emergency landing, according to the source.
The responders resuscitated Nusbaum with CPR and a defibrillator. The pilot's son, Chance Nusbaum, had been monitoring the flight, and was first on the scene. The FAA is investigating the incident, and the source notes that the emergency landing was performed successfully, and there was no damage to the plane.
Many independent pilots purchase pilot insurance policies to cover the unique risks associated with aviation. Most typical insurance policies will not cover risks associated with experimental aircraft, and pilot groups and organizations sometimes offer discounted term life insurance for pilots through a group rate program.
