Crash near Hailey, Idaho
December 2, 2011, 05:48 pm
A small private plane recently crashed on a ridge a mile east of Hailey, Idaho, injuring the two passengers. Technical rescue crews had to hike up the mountain in search for the aircraft.
The Idaho Mountain Express reported the Cessna 182 single-engine plane crashed at the top of Water Gulch after leaving Friedman Memorial Airport. Jay Davis, public information officer for the Blaine County Sheriff's Office, said the pilot attempted to activate the craft's autopilot right after takeoff, but the system failed to engage. As a result, the plane veered sharply to the left and hit the ridge.
The occupants suffered injuries, but no one was killed. The pilot called emergency dispatch to report the crash and injuries, but the crews struggled to reach the crash site due to its remote location, the source reported.
While that crash did not damage any property, a similar incident occurred in North Carolina, when a plane smashed into a house close to the PTI Airport. My Fox 8 reported the residents of the home have asked the airport to buy their house, because the low-flying planes coming to land scare them.
Investing in pilot insurance can protect pilots from expenses associated with a crash or flight malfunction.
