Officials at Eastern Michigan University recently gathered to celebrate the opening of the college's new Eagle Flight Center at the Capital Region International Airport, according to the Lansing State Journal. The college hopes to increase support for and enrollment in its burgeoning aviation program, which hopes to take advantage of the market potential for pilots and aviation technicians.
Noting a recent Boeing study, EMU president Susan Martin told the source that employment in the aviation industry is projected to increase by some 40 percent in the coming years, employing more than 466,000 pilots. The increase is largely due to the growth of burgeoning Asian markets, but other factors, including the recent mass-retirement of major airline pilots due to changes in pension benefits, are also at work.
Currently, the aviation program at EMU enrolls just 10 students, but that number is expected to increase significantly with the completion of the new flight center, according to chief flight instructor Alex Bloye.
Many who enter the field of aviation benefit from the support services of pilot organizations and groups. Some groups offer discounted rates on pilot insurance policies as well as advice on estate planning for pilots. Aviators often have to consider finances differently than average citizens, and the support of a pilot organization can make these considerations clearer.
