FAA considers new process for aircraft certification

The Federal Aviation Administration recently announced that it was considering a review and restructuring of current aircraft certification standards in an effort to optimize the certification process and improve safety standards for all aircraft, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association reports.
An aviation ruling committee will evaluate current certification practices and address issues with aircraft certification. The AOPA suggests that the ARC will likely consider a more stratified process of certification to better deal with the expanding complexities of modern aircraft. The source notes that current certification standards, while updated, is designed to evaluate the most complex high performance aircraft. A stratified certification process would tailor inspection to the grade of aircraft being evaluated, saving resources and ensuring the functionality of the machine's systems.
The ARC is also likely to address safety concerns, developing processes to ease the installation of parachutes and other safety mechanisms in older aircraft built before the safety equipment was standardized to the level it is today.
While the FAA is responsible for ensuring the safety of airplanes that it deems certifiable, pilots are tasked with flying safely through their own practices. Pilot insurance is something every pilot should consider because of the unique health and safety circumstances that a pilot endures.
