Pilots aid in post-Irene relief in the Bahamas

On August 25, Bahamas Habitat, a nonprofit relief organization, began organizing and mobilizing volunteer pilots to assist in relief efforts in the Bahamas, which was hit hard by Hurricane Irene, a category 3 hurricane at the time it made landfall on the islands, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
While initial reports from the island were vague, officials noted that a strong response would be implemented regardless of the severity of the damage, noting the size and strength of the hurricane indicated the potential for extensive damage that would necessitate a significant relief effort.
"The aviation community has proven to be a powerful force for good in times like these," said John Armstrong, chairman and president of Bahamas Habitat. "We hope many new pilots will join us in this response."
The AOPA notes that the independent aviation community has made a significant impact in previous natural disasters, including the recent earthquake in Haiti. Volunteer pilots are often certified by government agencies before they are allowed to participate in relief efforts, and the ownership of a pilot insurance policy may be a requirement for participation in some relief activities.
