FAA temporary extension approved

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committe has approved the 18th short-term extension of the Federal Aviation Administration, according to General Aviation News.
H.R. 1079, know as the Airport and Airway Extension Act 2011, was approved on March 16 and will provide funding for the FAA until May 31, 2011, beginning after the current extension period expires on March 30, the source said.
The act is being used as interim reassurance that the FAA will remain funded until a permanent reauthorization vote, currently under consideration in Congress, is passed.
"The committee has finished its work on the long-term FAA reauthorization, and the other House committees with jurisdiction are considering their portions of the bill this week," said Transportation and Infrastructure chairman John Mica. "Since the earliest the House can take up that bill is the final week of this month, this extension is necessary to ensure aviation programs do not lapse."
The FAA handles many of the important safety regulations that affect general aviation pilots. However, the organization cannot protect many accidents from occurring. Adequate pilot insurance is always essential for pilot's to protect their families, should they die in a fatal crash.
