General aviation, petroleum interests meet to discuss lead in emissions

Members of the general aviation and petroleum industries met to discuss developing a process that would reduce lead emissions in aircraft, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association reported recently.
The industries formed a coalition to further their work, which will look at the environmental advantages offered by reducing lead emissions while keeping aircraft safety in mind. Another factor under consideration include whether it is technically feasible to create such a propellant.
"The reduction of lead emissions from general aviation aircraft is a significant issue for AOPA and the industry," Craig Fuller, president of the AOPA, said.
Along with the AOPA, the meeting featured members of the American Petroleum Institute, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association and the National Air Transportation Association, along with a number of others.
Recently, the Environmental Protection agency said it is preparing to put forward new rules regarding lead emissions from general aviation aircraft at the request of an environmental organization. Meanwhile, other members of the industry are looking to reduce its reliance on foreign oil by investigating alternative fuels, which may lead to environmental benefits.
