Number of airline passengers up in March

June 14, 2010, 05:14 pm

While airlines may have faced decreasing consumer interest during the recession, the number of customers they service has seen improvement.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics - part of the Department of Transportation - the number of domestic and international passengers was up 2.4 percent in March when compared to the same month in 2009, although the industry could still stand to see some improvement.

"The March 2010 passenger total was 7.8 percent below that of two years ago in March 2008," the BTS said.

At the domestic level, the number of passengers was up 2 percent. Meanwhile, international flights saw an increase of 5 percent. On a year-to-date basis, travelers were up 0.6 percent domestically and 2.8 percent for destinations outside of the country.

As passenger levels increase, so could the number of airplanes companies put up in theair. In fact, the Federal Aviation Administration expects an increase in traffic in the coming years, which is why it is pushing for the implementation of the Next Generation Air Transportation System.

NextGen will use satellite-based technology to help keep track of planes, rather than ground-based radar.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19835960-ADNFCR
