The Kansas Aviation Museum recently unveiled its new $120,000 Special Archive Center, a 6,000-square-foot facility that meets the standards of the American Association of Museums for archival storage. The center will be used to house the museum's sensitive collections of aviation books, magazines, microfilm, photographs and films.
Lon Smith, Kansas Aviation Museum executive director, told The Wichita Eagle the archival room is controlled for humidity, light and temperature to properly store and protect historic items such as old drawings and blueprints of the first airplanes built in the state. The museum currently houses all 29 original blueprints of Swift Sport, an aircraft company launched in 1929. The company only built eight planes before crumbling due to the stock market crash.
Smith said the archival room project was funded by donations, including a major contribution from Sensor Systems of California, a radar equipment company. The museum also accepted gifts from the Hypatia Club, Bombardier LearJet and the Lattner Family Foundation, the source reported.
Another historical aspect of aviation is the use of pilot insurance to protect pilots and passengers in the sky.
