Kansas State campus adds new planes

December 30, 2011, 04:52 pm

The aviation program at Kansas State University's campus in Salina recently added five new Cessna Skyhawk planes to the school's fleet of learning aircrafts.

Kurt Barnhart, aviation department head at the school, told KSAL-AM that the planes are equipped with the G1000 avionics system and autopilot capabilities. This technology enables students to receive a well-rounded aviation experience.

"They start learning a gas gauge environment and, as they build flight time, move into more technologically advanced aircraft," Barnhart told the source.

Dennis Kuhlman, CEO and dean of Kansas State Salina, said it is important to keep adding new planes to the program so the school can maintain a low student-to-aircraft ratio.

In addition, students interested in aviation can also find unique resources in Northeast Wisconsin. WGBA Green Bay reported the staff at E.A.A. Airventure Museum are offering flight-based educational activities and crafts for children interested in flying during Kids Week at the facility. Many topics will be discussed including flight safety, pilot insurance and the variety of planes being used.
