In 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright set the scene for the explosion of air travel with their first successful flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Exactly 100 years later, the Living Legends of Aviation organization was created to celebrate and recognize achievements in aviation.
The ninth annual Living Legends of Aviation Awards were recently held, featuring a tribute to its founder Leonard Cliff Robertson, as well as Burt Rutan and Paul Allen, who made major contributions to space travel. Morgan Freeman also received the Aviation Inspiration and Patriotism Award for his work to promote the industry.
Harrison Ford presented his Aviation Legacy Award to Dr. Richard Sugden for his volunteer work in the aviation field and efforts in third world countries. Sugden is a Wounded Warrior volunteer, who works with the Young Eagles program and is combating poaching in Kenya to improve conservation and wildlife efforts.
J. Robert Duncan, founder of Duncan Aviation, was honored with the Lifetime Aviation Entrepreneur Award, for successfully transforming a family business into a trusted aviation company.
Furthermore, Captain Sullenberger who landed U.S. Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, saving 155 passengers and crew members, was inducted into the Living Legends of Aviation. Sullenberger has used the heroic experience to further encourage innovations in aircraft safety and volunteers with the EAA Eagles Program to nurture interest in aviation. One way to protect against unexpected problems in the sky is by purchasing pilot insurance.
In regards to aircrafts, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which has yet to go mainstream, recently received the Aircraft of Legend Award. The aircraft is predicted to have a significant impact on the aviation industry, with a slew of new features and upgrades to improve safety and efficiency.
Bob Hoover will also be a guest of honor at the event, celebrating his 90th birthday at a special post-awards Birthday Bash.
