A licensed commercial pilot before he reached the age of 19, Jim Zimmer has been involved in some aspect of the aviation business for the majority of his life. Making a living in pilot insurance sales, Zimmer recently opened Advantage Flight Service, which provides flying lessons, scenic rides and airplane rentals from the Southern Illinois Airport, Southern Business Journal reports. While Zimmer says he never envisioned owning a flight service as comprehensive as Advantage, he believes it was an organic move that has been met with relative success. When Southern Illinois airport did not renew the contract of the previous independent flight service, Tate’s Aviation, Zimmer took the opportunity to start his own business. Advantage rents two Cessna 172 aircraft for between $125 and $135 an hour, and offers affordable half hour introductory flights for people interested in aviation who may not fit the mold of the traditional pilot. Zimmer notes that Advantage serves mostly student pilots and business people who have always wanted to fly, but he hopes his more affordable options open the world of flight to more people. As a long-time pilot insurance salesman, Zimmer knows the importance of a plan tailored to a pilot’s specific needs. While standard insurance may cover most indices of everyday life, your experiences as a pilot may extend beyond the scope of regular insurance.
