Los Angeles City Council pushes to close local flight schools

The Los Angeles City Council, in response to complaints of local residents, has taken efforts to close all five flight schools located at the Santa Monica Airport, according to the Los Angeles Business Journal.
The source says the council is placing pressure on the Federal Aviation Administration to also change a flight path and, in essence, shut down the airport's operations.
Though a spokesman for the FAA says the group is considering changing departure procedures, there are factors at play, such as grants the airport accepted from the flight schools based there, which would prevent it from evicting the training facilities without just cause.
Some argue that homeowners lack a viable argument.
"They knew they were moving into a house near an airport, and it cost a little less," Stuart Cook, owner of Skyway Aviation, told the source. "It's kind of scary to think they're trying to close the flight schools. We train a lot of pilots."
Proper training is essential to successful pilots that are knowledgeable about the best safe flying practices. However, they cannot serve as a a guarantee that a pilot may not be involved in a fatal plane accident. For accident-causing hazards that are out of a pilot's control, it is important to be protected with life insurance for pilots.
