Mid-air plane crash kills two pilots

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a mid-air collision in upstate New York that led to the deaths of two pilots. The Times Herald-Record reports that the planes, both single-engine Pipers, were flying back to Sussex Airport in New Jersey when the collision occurred.
The pilots flew together from New Jersey to Boonton, New York to pick up the second plane. The return trip turned fatal when one of the planes clipped the other's wing, sending them both spiraling to the ground, according to witness reports.
Authorities are withholding the names of the deceased, according to the news source. Pilot life insurance can allow pilots to rest easier, knowing that their families will be taken care of in the event of a fatal pane crash.
One of the planes "was so badly burned, we couldn't get any numbers off the wreckage," New York State Police captain, Joseph Tripodo, told the New Jersey Star Ledger. The Federal Aviation Administration eventually provided the police with information that helped to trace the plane's origin.
