San Jose's Mineta International Airport is showing off a major new renovation project that features everything from a solar-powered parking garage to a new terminal that may emerge as one of the city's architectural landmarks. The project cost $1.3 billion and includes a new Terminal B and concourse that replaces the former Terminal C. The airport's Terminal A also underwent sweeping changes. A report in the San Jose Mercury News describes another feature, the "Space Observer" sculpture, which features a camera and monitor that track the movement of people as they walk past it. The newspaper added that architects for the project sought to create a metaphor in the design for data cable, with people moving through Terminal B in a manner reminiscent of information packets in recognition of nearby Silicon Valley. According to its official website, the airport's Terminal B opened for full service on June 30, although there are some aspects of the project stillunderway. According to the airport's website, it served more than 8.3 million passengers in 2009 and runs about 130 flights per day on 13 domestic and international carriers.
