Missouri transportation department seeks artists' help

December 9, 2010, 09:17 am

Artists can put their talent to use by entering the Missouri Department of Transportation's contest. The department is seeking an illustration or photograph to be featured on next year's Aeronautical Charter.

Submissions of aviation-related artwork are being accepted until the end of the year. The opportunity is a good one for those who want their craft widely distributed. The Missouri 2011-2012 Aeronautical Chart goes to many airports, legislators and museums. People do not need to be a resident of Missouri to enter the contest.

Other states also offer a similar contest. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation sought artwork from school-aged children earlier this year.

"More than 500 entries poured in from homes and classrooms around the state and the students continue to impress us with their creativity," said PennDOT secretary Allen Biehler.

Such contests offer a unique way for people to become engaged in aviation even if they don't have the means to take flight on their own. Over the years the number of private pilots has decreased, making it even more important for outreach efforts to work.
