An airport in South Carolina greeted a new addition to its campus, which will help those who take part in general aviation. Myrtle Beach International Airport recently opened a general aviation terminal with a ceremony. The terminal cost $4.5 million and is 11,500 square feet. According to television station WMBF, the construction was paid for by using federal and state grants, and those who run the airport expect it will generate millions of dollars in return for the investment. "We're looking for an increase in economic activity because of this terminal, an increase in capacity much more than the old terminal, and you'll see a big difference with large jets coming in here," Michael Marlowe, general aviation manager at the airport, told the television station. Along with increasing business traffic, the new terminal may help with tourism in the area. WMBF said close to 50,000 people use the general aviation facilities at the airport annually. While the terminal may help the airport increase general aviation traffic, the industry as a whole is seeing some improvement after a decline seen during the recession. The decline in aviation orders seen during the first part of 2010 was an improvement over the same period last year.
