New ruling will affect thousands of Cessna airplanes

The Federal Aviation Administration has finalized their ruling regarding Cessna seat rails for all of the aircraft that fall between the Cessna 150A to T337H-SP models. The new airworthiness directive adds steps and clarifies procedures for inspections and replacement of seat-latching mechanism parts, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. The FAA said they were issuing these changes after repots came out that seats were slipping on the rails where the primary latch pin for the pilot seat is not properly engaged. This problem could cause the pilot to slip away from the controls and possibly lose control of the aircraft, potentially resulting in an unnecessary increase of pilot's life insurance claims. These new changes go into effect this week and will retain the inspection procedures of the prior AD, the media outlet reports. The FAA estimates that these new changes will affect 36,000 airplanes in the U.S. and will cost each owner approximately $85. This mandatory work is projected to produce $3.06 million for the repair shop industry. Owners will have 100 hours time-in-service or 12 months to comply with these new regulations.
