Venice, Florida, readying city's airport for traffic

After years of struggles within the community over what to do with the former World War II flight training facility, Venice is finally able to move forward with much needed airport renovations, according to the Sarasota Herald Tribune.
Some residents wanted to use the property to build a luxury hotel, while others wanted it to be limited to small planes only. The City Council tried to downgrade the airport in order to discourage larger planes from using the facility, but the Federal Aviation Administration would not allow it, the media outlet reports.
Eventually the council was able to keep its current classification, move residences and reconfigure one of the city’s golf courses to meet FAA requirements. The city will now have to apply for $12 million in federal funds to relocate and repave the main runway, according to the news source.
Once the updates have been funded and completed, the airport will allow local pilots a new venue to operate out of and possibly encourage more people to try their hand at flying and purchase pilots life insurance policies. Having the airport open to multiple aircraft types can bring new business to the city and help accommodate emergency rescue efforts.
