New runways have old problems

June 7, 2011, 12:17 pm

The new multi-million dollar airport runway at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, was closed last week due to drainage problem, according to the Lexington Herald Leader. The temporary closure is due to the heavy rains that have been hitting the area lately.

"Any time you've got a new runway, you've got kinks," airport executive director Eric Frankl told the news source. "There's always going to be some cleanup issues that have to be done.

This is not the first time the new runway has been closed since it opened less than a year ago, the paper reports. The airport issued a notice of closure to pilots in order to prevent a dangerous situation that may force someone to use a pilots life insurance policy sooner than they need to.

The rain caused debris to clog the 4,000 foot runway's drainage system, according to WKYT-TV.

The drainage water also got into the electrical transformers, but the lighting along the main portion of the airport was undisturbed. This new runway is used by smaller aircraft when the crosswinds are too strong for landing on the main landing platforms, the station reports.
