One woman is setting out to teach girls that aviation isn't just for the boys anymore. Pilot Lynda Meeks started an organization, Girls With Wings, as a way to help girls explore aviation and "achieve their full potential."
Meeks told the Minnesota Post-Bulletin that girls are constantly being sent the message of fairytales and she wanted to present a different kind of role model.
The paper reports that Meek's business started off with girl's clothing, but has grown to include books and jewelry items.
Meeks hopes that through her work, she is creating a positive image for girls regardless of what they end up pursuing career-wise.
"Even if the girl doesn't become a pilot, we just want to show her a positive role model in a male-dominated field," Meeks said. "It's not just about becoming a pilot. I just want them to see something different."
Even though females make up a small number of pilots, they are making headway. American Airlinessay they were the first major company to hire a female pilot in 1973. As of 2008, the carrier employs 478 female pilots.
