An Illinois pilot died four weeks after crashing his plane at South Bend Regional Airport in Indiana. WNDU-TV reports that 50 year old Rick KcKinney's death was caused by the injuries he suffered during the crash.
John Scahlliol told the news source that McKinney's plane landed on its left wing and "cart-wheeled to where it now rests" 250 feet south of the runway. He explains that the accident was probably caused by wind lifting the right wing of the plane up when McKinney came in for a landing.
Chicago Breaking News reported that McKinney was conscious when paramedics reached the site of the crash. He was in critical condition as they rushed him to the Memorial Hospital in South Bend, but eventually was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he passed away.
McKinney was the only person on board the single-engine Cirrus SR22 according to The Republic. His death may not be in vain if other pilots can learn from McKinney's accident. Environmental circumstances can make an otherwise smooth flight turn sour in an instant, which is why pilot life insurance can be a good investment.
