A small plane recently collided with trees in Fort Ebey State Park and crashed on Whidbey Island just off the coast of Washington. The pilot of the plane was killed on impact.
Komo News reported the single-engine Piper Arrow hit a hillside and caught fire just before it plunged into the state park.
The Associated Press reported helicopters could spot the smoking wreckage on the hillside as emergency vehicles scoured the park to find the plane. The plane was owned by the Naval Air Station Whidbey Flying Club, and only the pilot is reported to have been on board the aircraft.
Naval Air Station Whidbey spokeswoman Kim Martin told the source that the plane was used for recreational flights and flight lessons for military personnel stationed on Whidbey Island. While the identity of the pilot has yet to be released, Martin said it was a civilian that was flying the plane. The cause of the crash has yet to be determined. Pilot insurance can protect pilots and loved ones from unexpected accidents such as this crash.
