Pilots fly for a good cause

Some people fly for a living, and others live because of flying thanks to a nonprofit humanitarian organization. Flights for Life helps volunteer pilots bring blood to patients nationwide, reports the Glendale Star.
Ken Calman is a retired Phoenix, Arizona, police officer and private aviation pilot. The paper reports he is one of 160 volunteers that donates his time, plane and fuel to help bring people life-saving blood and related medical equipment.
Calman told the paper that flying with the organization's president, Warren McIlvoy, has helped him feel more comfortable in the air.
"Flying with Warren built my confidence and I decided to try it out," said Calman. "This program and others like it show the real value of general aviation to the community."
There are other charitable programs pilots can take part of. The Los Angeles Times reports that some take part in the Pilots N Paws program, which helps transport shelter dogs to new owners.
These are just a couple of ways pilots can use their unique skills and qualifications to help others. It's important to make sure one has proper pilot insurance before participating in a program.
