Recreational use statute in New Mexico now includes aviation

Ron Krohn, the vice president of the New Mexico Pilots Association and a member of the Recreational Aviation Foundation, was a major player in recent New Mexico legislative changes.
He pushed for the state legislature to amend a recreational use statute to include the term "operation of aircraft," according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. The amendment became law in April 2011.
"Surely this will lead to the opening of new airstrips in New Mexico, as well as showing others across the country that this can be done," RAF president, John McKenna, stated in a news release.
Recreational pilots can get ready to fly from new destinations by performing safety inspections on their planes and securing pilot life insurance. The NMPA Recreational Airstrip Committee is already mapping airstrips and listing them on the website when they have been verified.
The news source states that these statutes provide liability protection for landowners. Previously, there was nothing in the statute about recreational aviation. The amendment is meant to allow property owners to feel comfortable opening their airstrips to the public.
