Van Nuys Airport traffic declining

Van Nuys Airport, widely considered the busiest general aviation airport in the nation, is seeing its traffic decline drastically, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.
Though there is no definitive cause for the decline, the source says some are blaming airport management and high rental rates, while others believe changes in the aviation industry, including a decline of propeller planes, may be to blame.
Despite the problems at the airport, local officials note the important impact Van Nuys has on the community.
"The two biggest economic drivers in the San Fernando Valley are Van Nuys and Burbank airports," Rob Gilmore, director of investor relations for the Valley Economic Alliance, told the source. "Their interests are our interests - and they need to be coddled."
The airport told the paper that it is still in the black, posting a $1 million profit. However, declining traffic may lead to limited service and the potential for understaffing in an effort to conserve revenues.
Air traffic controllers and other airport staff play an important role in flight safety and understaffing could potentially increase the hazards pilots face. Life insurance for pilots is an important protection in the event of a pilot's death, as it may assist with outstanding debts as well as financial assistance for dependents.
