Senate committee passes bill to assist California flight schools

A bill recently introduced by Senator Jean Fuller, that would exempt some flight schools and instructors from the recent California Private Postsecondary Education Act, has been passed by the Senate Committee on business, Professions and Economic Development, according to the Aircraft owners and Pilots Association.
The bill was passed unanimously after the committee heard testimony from a number of aviation insiders, including the AOPA California region representative, John Pfeifer.
While testifying, Pfeifer told the committee that the act “clearly stated that it was the intent of the legislature to ensure a regulatory structure that provides an appropriate level of oversight."
"I submit that onerous and expansive regulations that put flight instructors out of business even while there is no financial risk to the flight students is far from an appropriate level of oversight," Pfeifer said.
Making the burden easier on flight schools is an important mission within the aviation industry, as proper training is essential to creating knowledgeable and safety-conscious new pilots - something that may be of concern to all pre-existing pilots they will have to share the sky with. Having pilot life insurance remains important, though, as even the best training cannot prevent certain fatal accidents from occurring.
