In the woods just outside a New York airport in Fulton, a small plane crashed and killed a pilot on board. The aircraft was classified as experimental, and made impact just a few miles from the Oswego County Airport.
The Syracuse Post-Standard reported a witness heard the plane's engine sputter and eventually die before the plane plummeted into the trees.
According to ABC affiliate WSYR, the victim of the crash was John Wing, who reportedly built the plane in the basement of his home. Wing's stepmother told the source that he learned how to build planes from his father and also had a desire to take risks. Wing was learning how to fly the plane himself, practicing how to land and take off with his home-made aircraft.
The police told the source that the plane was broken into several pieces when it landed in the trees. Neighbors near the crash said their windows rattled prior to the plane's descent, and residents called 911 when they saw the wreckage. The pilot left behind a wife, daughter and son. Pilot insurance can be used to protect surviving family members from financial burdens after such events.
