Aviation serves an important role in the country, especially in the communities which have airports and aircraft production facilities. The industry provides a number of jobs and economic benefits to towns and communities. Wichita, Kansas has long been considered an aviation hub. However, a variety of factors have led some to believe the status could be in jeopardy. A couple of large aviation companies have left the area or are considering doing so. That being said, however this past week was one of celebration in the city as Lieutenant Governor Troy Finley dedicated the National Center for Aviation Training, according to news station KWCH. "Aviation and manufacturing were extremely hard hit in this recession and I know I'm preaching to the choir here in Wichita," said Finley. Television station KAKE reports that more than 12,000 layoffs have plagued the aircraft industry. They say a number of the students enrolling in programs aren't training to be production workers, but rather service technicians. There will always be competition from companies outsourcing work, but technology and other advancements can also lead to new job creation.
