Every flying Lockheed P-38 Lightning in the country will be at the California Capital Airshow this September. It's a rare event for all the aircraft to be together at one location.
The aviation show will showcase the aircraft as well as pay tribute to those who flew or had some part in the planes' creation and maintenance.
California Capital Airshow executive director Darcy Brewer says it's an honor to have such aircraft on display.
"Each one of these airplanes, and the men associated with them, has a story to tell, and our venture will provide the opportunity for those tales of valor, sacrifice, and heroism to be shared with young and old alike, to make their honor and courage tangible to this generation and those to come," said Brewer.
The P-38 is known for its role during World War II. Many credit the aircraft's high speed and powerful armament for its success.
As those who are associated with the aircraft continue to age, the airshow predicts that another gathering of this kind will be difficult to achieve.
