According to WTKR news, a Virginia CBS affiliate, William Myers, a 77 year old Fayetteville man, recently earned his pilot's license following his graduation from the Sky Venture Aviation School. Myers took his final flight exam at Drake Field, where he first flew as a passenger in an airplane in 1941.
The news source notes that at that time, Drake Field was little more than a landing strip of packed dirt, and Myers recalls somewhat relaxed safety conditions. He says his first flight taught him that he didn't have the most protective of mothers.
"She really didn't care much about the safety of her first son if she was going to let me fly in a 40 horsepower airplane, with a 17 year old pilot, who had less than 100 hours of flying time," Myers told the news source.
Myers fell in love with aviation on that first ride and joined the Air Force in 1958, and though he couldn't fly for the military, his desire to earn his license never waned.
Regardless of age, many pilots insure themselves with a pilot insurance policy. Unlike a typical life insurance policy, pilot insurance covers the specific threats to health and safety that come with a life in aviation. Many pilot and aviator organizations offer group rates on pilot insurance policies.
