Adjust Your Altitude career day attracted 200

November 28, 2012, 01:27 pm

Duncan Aviation officials recently said that 200 students, parents, counselors and teachers showed up for its aviation career day, Adjust Your Altitude, on October 3. The event was set up to educate and inspire students interested in pursuing careers in the aviation industry.

High school students from Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas attended the Adjust Your Altitude event and were given an opportunity to meet exhibitors, including representatives from the aviation industry, 24 different colleges and universities, aviation media, government agencies and military organizations. They were also given a chance to tour Duncan Aviation's campus and take part in various hands-on activities, like testing their aircraft maintenance skills. Todd Duncan, chairman of Duncan Aviation, addressed event-goers and gave out $3,000 in scholarship awards, while more than 80 Duncan employees contributed to the event.

“We were hoping to educate students about all of the unique career opportunities in aviation and pique their interest in the industry," said Felicia Nichelson, coordinator of the Duncan Aviation career day planning committee. "Based on the overwhelmingly positive response we received, we met and exceeded that goal.”

The aviation community is constantly looking to inspire the future of aviation in youngsters, and another collaboration will help them once they get out of high school. Piper Aircraft and the Florida Institute of Technology announced earlier this month that they have joined forces for the Piper Aviation Career Alliance to encourage and support opportunities for aviation graduates from the school.

“Piper is thrilled that the Florida Institute of Technology has agreed to become our launch customer for the Piper Aviation Career Alliance," said Simon Caldecott, Piper president and CEO, at the company’s celebratory anniversary Fly-In in Vero Beach. "We are doubly pleased that this top-flight institution has chosen our 75th overall birthday celebration and our 55th anniversary of becoming a Florida business to make the announcement."

The event featured more than 20 companies that sponsored activities including a welcome reception, vendor exhibits, aircraft static display, customer awards, facility tours, a history lesson from Piper’s official historian, a Piper meet-up and a pancake breakfast. The alliance was made official with a five-year agreement that provides the Florida Institute of Technology with new Piper aircraft and career opportunities at Piper, including internships, scholarships, interviews and mentoring.

Those aspiring to be pilots should know early on the importance of ensuring a family's financial future with pilot life insurance.
