The brother of Amanda Franklin, one-half of the husband and wife aerobatic team whose plane spontaneously caught fire and crashed at the South Padre Fiesta on March 12, has reported that he is optimistic about her recovery.
Matt Younkin posted on his blog that Amanda's injuries are not as severe as originally reported by media outlets. She had originally been reported to have severe life-threatening burns, but is reportedly doing better than when she was originally checked-in to the burn unit of a local hospital. Younkin says doctors report her chances off a full recovery are increasing each day.
Younkin also states that her husband Kyle's injuries are mild compared to what was originally reported, and he is expected to recover fully, as well. He also credits Kyle's actions with saving his sister's life.
"I strongly credit [Kyle] for the fact that my little sister is still with us. ... I can say without a shadow of a doubt that he made no less than five quick decisions in the air and on the ground that gave her a second chance at life," Younkin says.
Though the Franklins are recovering well, the incident could have easily been fatal. It is important for pilots to protect their loved ones by obtaining pilot life insurance, should they be involved in an accident that results in their death.
