Pilots and tourists who plan to head to Chicago this summer may want to budget for some extra expenses that will come up along the way, according to recent media reports.
A Chicago Tribune article recently noted that everything from taxi fees to car rental rates and airline ticket taxes are set to rise in the near future at O'Hare International Airport as part of an effort by officials to generate revenues.
The newspaper added that among the 50 U.S. cities with the highest passenger air traffic, Chicago has the highest tax cost for a single day's hotel, meals and rental car costs, at $40.99. Other leaders were reportedly Las Vegas and Orlando, which imposed a respective $32.67 and $25.12 in taxes for these things.
Taxes are likely to become an increasingly important policy debate as more governments try to protect vital industries like tourism while also finding new ways to close budget shortfalls and make up for other lost revenues.
For pilots who already contend withhigh costs from fuel and other aviation needs, the cost of visiting a given destination can figure strongly into their travel plans.
