A recent incident in the skies over Chicago shows how helpful it can be for people to have a pilot's license.
A report from the Chicago Tribune, focused on Patti DeLuna, a flight attendant who helped land a passenger airliner at O'Hare International Airport after her first officer came down with a stomach flu. The passengers on board were not in danger during the incident.
The newspaper added that DeLuna had not flown a plane for nearly two decades, but also quoted her as saying that she "spent a lot of time in the cockpit looking at the flight deck panel and asking questions" and was "the best candidate for the job at the time."
A report from ABC News noted that DeLuna would have been performing "supplemental tasks" while helping to land the plane, such as working the radio, reading checklists and setting the landgear.
"There are thousands of commercial certified pilots who do not fly for the airlines. So having a commercial pilot onboard would not be that uncommon," ABC quoted former airline pilot John Cox as saying.
