DOT decision to eliminate BARR unfavorable among many

June 8, 2011, 08:24 am

In response to the Department of Transportation's decision to eliminate the Block Aircraft Registration Request program, several groups have announced they will move forward with a legal challenge. The National Business Aviation Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and Experimental Aircraft Association are planning to seek an injunction against the DOT.

"The DOT's inexplicable decision last week to abandon a widely supported, Congressionally enabled policy permitting private citizens to opt out of publicly available flight tracking applications leaves us no choice but to challenge the move in court," said NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen. "The agency appears to have simply ignored the thousands of individuals and companies that voiced their strong and principled opposition to this change."

BARR allows aviation owners and operators the ability to choose not to have commercial flight-tracking services broadcast their aircraft's movements to third-parties.

Supporters of the policy feel that restricting these rights will hurt national security and infringe on public privacy. Potentially putting people at risk could also cause pilots life insurance policy rates to rise.
