This Saturday the annual Young Eagles Day will introduce the world of general aviation to thousands of youth across the globe, according to AVweb.com.
"This is a chance to focus on the program and share the freedom to fly with a new generation," Experimental Aircraft Association president Rod Hightower told the news source.
The Young Eagles program was founded in 1992 and this event began in 1994. Over the past 16 years more than 1.6 million demonstration flights have been given to youngsters all over the world, free of charge, the site reports.
Before the flight begins the pilot will provide a brief introduction about what to expect, and may include a preflight inspection and discussion of the engine, according to the Young Eagles website. These experienced pilots, many of whom carry pilots life insurance, will then take their young counterparts into the air for a 15 to 20 minute flight.
The EAA also provides free student memberships to the association, a free flight lesson and reimbursement for the FAA written test, according to the site. Becoming a member will open students up to more then $300,000 in scholarships and awards they can apply for.
