For many pilots, safety isn't just something they think about in terms of flying. Safety can also be in reference to their job security. A number of airline mergers have been proposed or are taking place.
Airways and America West Airlines, for example, have been laboring through contract negotiations for the past five years.
Pilots who find themselves tangled in the web of a proposed sale of ExpressJet Airlnes to SkyWest Holdings, however think that this merger will be different.
Air Line Pilots Association chairman Captain Chris Cashmareck says pilots and management have already been working together to develop a plan to make the merger as smooth as possible.
"For an airline merger to be truly successful, it has to be a partnership benefiting all parties - employees, management, shareholders, and passengers," says Cashmareck. "Our pilots are a valued partner in this transaction and as such, we see reason for optimism for the ExpressJet pilots in this deal."
In early August, the pilots were vocal about the need for the merger to provide career potential and a fair seniority list in order to win their support.
