Mistakenly identified couple makes best of situation

Earlier this year, John and Martha King became well-known for their aircraft. However, their notoriety wasn't earned the way most would hope. The couple was arrested by police.
Santa Barbara law enforcement officials were monitoring aircraft when they identified the King's airplane tail number as matching that of a stolen airplane. While the tail number did in fact match that of a missing aircraft, the number had been cancelled and, early last year, reassigned.
Since their arrest and subsequent release, the Kings have developed a set of guidelines to help authorities.
In a statement, John King said he and his wife have moved on from the incident.
"You know, I suppose we could have stayed upset," says King, "but we've spent our entire professional lives examining potentially dangerous aviation situations and looking for ways to manage the inherent risks."
The King's misfortune calls attention to another thing that can go wrong when flying. In addition to ensuring weather conditions are right and equipment is in working order, it's advisable to have life insurance for pilots in case something goes wrong during a flight.
