Last week, members of the Oklahoma State community remembered the members of the university's basketball team, support staff and pilots who passed away in a private jet crash after leaving a game in Colorado on January 27, 2001, according to Kansas City Star.
The 10-year anniversary of the crash has been marked by a banner in the gymnasium with the number 10, listing the names of those whose lives were claimed when the plane went down, the Star reported.
According to an article in USA Today, the National Transportation and Safety Board determined the crash was caused when the pilot became disoriented and was unable to control the plane during a minor loss of electrical power. However, the pilot's family disputed that claim and has stated that, after doing an independent investigation, the electrical failure was much more extensive and was the ultimate cause of the crash, the paper said.
The plane crash is a reminder of the dangers that face pilots and their passengers each time they take flight. Life insurance for pilots is an important investment, since it is one of the few ways pilots can ensure their families are provided for if they are involved in a fatal accident.
