Pilots help prevent spread of fatal disease

When many people think of pilots, they associate them with either flying commercial aircraft or joyriding in their own personal plane. However, the aviation industry also helps protect people's safety and well-being.
Pilots have recently been doing their part to help combat the threat of eastern equine encephalitis in southeastern Massachusetts. Within two days, pilots covered more than 300,000 acres of land with aerial spray.
Dynamic Aviation says their pilots have helped cover more than 5 million acres nationwide. In addition to combating mosquitoes potentially carrying EEE, the company also helps eliminate gypsy moths.
"We're pleased to have been able to support this time-sensitive request from the state of Massachusetts," said Dynamic Aviation president and CEO Michael Stoltzfus. "Many of the missions we support for government customers are about saving lives. This is one of those cases, and it's an honor to be able to help."
The Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention says EEE has a 33 percent mortality rate along with major brain damage for those who successfully combat the infection. Insect repellent is one way people can protect themselves against becoming infected with the disease.
