Pilots volunteer to rescue animals

Pilots can put their aviation skills to good use by volunteering to help homeless animals. Pilots N Paws is an organization which pairs pilots with animal rescue groups to help take animals to shelters and find homes.
This past weekend, more than 100 pilots helped 500 animals travel from New Orleans to shelters around the country. A number of needy animals are without homes as the economy still lags behind in Gulf Cost area. Pilots N Paws is a nationwide effort.
Program co-founder Debi Boies told Michigan's Macomb Daily newspaper that she hopes Pilots N Paws can help reduce the number of animals that have to be put down each year.
"These animals need help now," says Boies. "Many had families who loved them and are victims of the oil spill. Their owners have lost their jobs, their homes and are barely surviving. They no longer have the means to care for their pets."
Pilots N Paws is just one volunteer organization pilots can take part in while using their skill and craft. There are a number of other avenues pilots can look into if they are looking to use their aviation talents for a good cause.
