Boeing projects need for more pilots, maintenance workers

September 17, 2010, 07:48 am

The aviation industry is expected to grow in the next 20 years. With the anticipated job growth comes a need for more pilots and maintenance personnel.

Boeing is projecting the commercial aviation industry will need more than 466,000 pilots and 596,000 maintenance workers over the next two decades. Within that same time frame, it’s anticipated that at least 23,000 pilots and 30,000 maintenance personnel will be needed to work for all the airlines. Boeing estimates more than 97,000 pilot vacancies will be available in North America.

"To accommodate this growing demand, it will be vital to match training with the learning styles of students to come," says Boeing training and flight services chief customer officer Roei Ganzarski. "As an industry, we need to adapt to the learning styles of tomorrow's technologically savvy pilots and mechanics, and ensuring that training is globally accessible, adaptable to individual needs and competency-based."

People interested in becoming a pilot can begin by checking out their local airport. Some colleges also offer special programs tailored to the needs of those looking to become involved in the aviation industry.
