SAFE offers aviation and aerospace lesson plans for K-12 teachers

November 30, 2012, 06:15 pm

The Society of Aviation & Flight Educators recently announced that it has added on to its online Resource Center. The group provides content for flight, ground, avionics and maintenance technology instructors and recently added new material specifically for K-12 teachers who are involved in science, technology, engineering and math.

"SAFE is a member-oriented organization of aviation educators fostering professionalism and excellence in aviation through continuing education, professional standards and accreditation," reads the Society of Aviation & Flight Educators website. "Together with our industry partners and the Federal Aviation Administration, SAFE provides the aviation community with resources to advance the profession and to assist aviation educators in developing skilled, knowledgeable and safe members of the aviation community."

Most of SAFE material is only accessible for SAFE members, however training aids, syllabi and other materials are available on their Public Resource Center. SAFE decided to provide materials specific to K-12 teachers in response to a survey they issued during AirVenture 2012. The new tools will provide a streamlined process for teachers looking to introduce aviation and aerospace in the classroom.

“Our goal is to continue to provide aviation educators — members and non-members alike — with useful and easy-to-access educational resources and thanks to our working relationship with the FAA, members can now access the SAFE-created FAASTeam Flight Instructor Open Forums directly from our Resource Center," said Doug Stewart SAFE executive director.

Other aviation organizations have hosted events in order to educate high school-aged students on the aviation industry. The Adjust Your Altitude career day event put on by Duncan Aviation on October 3 brought in 200 students, parents, counselors and teachers, in order to educate and inspire students to pursue careers in the aviation industry.

Students came from Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas and had a chance to meet individuals from the aviation industry, including representatives from 24 different colleges and universities, aviation media, government agencies and military organizations. In addition, they had the opportunity to tour Duncan Aviation's campus and join in on various activities included in the event.

Piper Aircraft and the Florida Institute of Technology teamed up this month, announcing the Piper Aviation Career Alliance to encourage and support opportunities for aviation graduates from the school.

Current pilots and those aspiring to be pilots should know the importance of pilot life insurance before takeoff. This insurance can protect a family in the unlikely event of an emergency.
