The Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport in Spartanburg, South Carolina, recently underwent a $4.4 million renovation, according to Go Upstate. The project's focus was the refurbishment of the terminal building and addition of two new T-Hangars, which now allow the airport to house a total of about 140 airplanes.
Officials hope the improvements to the airport will provide an economic boost in the area. The airport, which has been in operation in some form since 1923, built the first terminal building in 1935, making it a familiar icon in Spartanburg. Developers tried to maintain the integrity of the original building's image, installing a new digital clock to the facade modeled after the original analog timepiece.
The interior of the new terminal pays homage to Spartanburg's rich aviation history, with floors painted to resemble active runways and a number of paintings and artifacts donated by the War Birds, a local group that specializes in historical aviation.
"The airport is certainly a shot in the arm for the city," War Birds commander David Fudge told the source. "It's such a positive project, even in these tough economic times. To get this done when Darwin and the city did, it certainly speaks highly of them."
Many independent pilots who operate out of regional airports purchase pilot insurance policies to protect their health and assets against the particular risks that come with a life in aviation.
